The Church and Society Committee of the Sparta United Methodist Church is connected to both the Conference and the General Boards of Church and Society. The job of the Church and Society Committee at all these levels in the United Methodist Church is to work on issues of social justice.
The Church and Society Committee advocates in the following areas:
>Promoting actions that benefit the poor, the elderly, children, and the downtrodden as reflected through the federal budget, local programs, and the established minimum wage.
>Promoting world peace.
>Raising awareness regarding the anti-torture campaign.
>Supporting Reconciling Ministries by working for full inclusion of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgenders in church and society.
>Urging responsible stewardship of the environment.
>Planning and instituting educational programs regarding current and ongoing social issues.
>Holding fundraising activities to support charities that benefit the poor, the elderly, children, and the downtrodden.
